The Tiger Tail Seahorse is native to coral reefs and seagrass/seaweed beds of the western Pacific Ocean. Some 15cm long, the adult is usually dark brown or black with light bars on the back and tail giving it its common name.

It is mainly nocturnal. Populations are extremely vulnerable due to human-caused habitat loss and overfishing, some 20 million/year alone being used in traditional Chinese medicine.
