The Short-finned (also Shortfin) Eel is native to freshwater lakes and coastal rivers of the southwest Pacific including SE Australia,
New Zealand and other Pacific islands.
Growing to around a metre long, mature eels migrate thousands of miles to spawn in the ocean around the Coral Sea.
The eel's early life is in the ocean, then as a glass eel in estuaries, then as an elver in estuaries or streams.
