The Squat Shrimp is one of several "Anemone" shrimps which live in stinging anemones for protection from predators, covering their bodies with mucous to avoid the stings. The Squat is also called the Sexy Shrimp for the way they raise and wave their abdomens, including when walking.

They are native to shallow reefs in tropical parts of the Indo-(western)Pacific, the Caribbean and the Atlantic Oceans. Red-brown with various white spotted markings, they grow to only 1.3cm long (excluding antennae). They will share the host anemone (sometimes coral) with other Squat Shrimp and small marine animals that also shelter in it, such as, above, with Porcelain Crab. (Clownfish/Anemonefish usually will not tolerate sharing of their host anemones with other animals.) They will clean the host anemone while feeding.
