The Tasmanian Giant Crab, is native to rocky and muddy areas of seabed off southern Australia.
The only species in its genus and one of the world's largest crabs, it's carapace grows to some 46cm (18 inches) across.
It's enormous claws, hidden from view, are tipped black. Males, which can be twice the size of females,
have one claw (usually the right) much larger than the other and which can be longer than the carapace width and sharp.
Diet is mainly carrion but also slow-moving snails, starfish and crustaceans (including its own species).
