The Common or Eurasian Minnow is native to streams, ponds and lakes in much of Europe and temperate Asia,
from Ireland/UK to Siberia. It is a shoaling fish.
It is usually brownish on top and pale below a spotted lateral line on the flank. The male becomes
more colourful when spawning, with red on his fins and underside and sometimes blue spots.
A small fish (hence the word "minnow" in common usage to mean unimportant), it grows to 7-14cm (3-5 inches) long.
