The Red Coris, also called African Coris and Coris Gaimard, is native to tropical seas of the Indian and west Pacific
Oceans, including off East Africa, giving it the "African" name but also off Japan and Australia.
The adult is initially female and red-brown with orange fins, blue spots and a yellow tail and is also called the Yellow-tail Coris.
It grows to 40cm long and transitions from female to male, becoming olive-brown.
As a juvenile, it looks completely different and is called the False Clown Wrasse since it mimics the Clown Anemonefish,
- the late stage juvenile or subadult is shown.
(Note the Clown Coris, Coris aygula is a different species.)
