Chequerboard Wrasse Halichoeres hortulanus

The Chequerboard Wrasse native to the Indo-Pacific. Like other wrasse, it is born female. If changing to male at maturity, the body and tail become mainly green, retaining the chequered pattern and pink lines on the head. It reaches 27cm long. It has teeth that can crush sand-dwelling snails and often follows fish that disturb the substrate.
