Old Wife Enoplosus armatus

The Old Wife, named after a grinding sound made with its teeth when caught, is native to coastal waters of temperate Australia. It has a dark brown or black on white striped pattern for camouflage amongst seagrasses and seaweed.

The fish has venomous dorsal spines for protection. It has, in the past, been classed with butterflyfish.
