The strange-looking Lookdown is in the Trevally family. It is native to sandy coastal regions of
the western Atlantic from Canada to Uruguay, including Bermuda.
It is a gregarious fish, sometimes in large shoals but usually in small groups.
It has a silver, laterally-compressed body, a long, grumpy-looking face and long, ribbon-like dorsal
and anal fins which are one of the key visual differences with its relative, the Atlantic Moonfish. Juveniles have stripes
which fade in adulthood. It can grow to some 45cm long.
They are fast predators and diet is small fish and invertebrates.
