The Sailfin Tang is native to reefs of the Pacific, from Japan to Hawaii and the Great Barrier Reef.
The adult, above left, is paler than the subadult, above right, with less yellow and a spotted belly.
Also called the Pacific Sailfin Tang, their bolder stripes are wider-spaced than those of the Red Sea
or Indian Ocean Sailfin and the tail is plain golden rather than spotted.
A large tang, they can grow to some 40 cm long. The name Sailfin relates to their ability to expand
their dorsal and ventral fins like a large sail around their body.
Juveniles are black and yellow with a clearer tail.

They spend the day grazing on algae.
