Kole Tang Ctenochaetus strigosus

The Kole Tang is a variable bristletooth Surgeonfish going by several other common names including the Spotted, Yellow-eyed and Golden-ring, among others.

Its colour varies considerably. Main background colours are purple, dark grey, dark red-brown and pinkish. It has a bright yellow eye ring.

It is native to tropical reefs of the Pacific Ocean.

It grows to some 15 cm long.

Adults spend much of the day grazing on reef turf algae, benefitting coral health. They also operate cleaning stations for marine turtles to have their shells cleaned of algae growth.
