The Convict Tang or Surgeonfish is native to tropical reefs of the Indo-Pacific region with a
wide distribution from East Africa via Japan/Australasia to the American coast.
It can reach 27cm long. Its "convict" name is in reference to its black-striped white pattern.
It is sometimes called the Black-barred Surgeonfish, but that is usually the name of the related Zebra Tang, A. polyzona,
with closer black barring.
A schooling fish, there are a number of variations in colour (extent of any yellow) and pattern
(shape and continuity of stripes, especially around pectoral and caudal fins) over its vast range.
