Sand Smelt
The Sand Smelt is native to coasts of the north-eastern Atlantic from Denmark/Scotland through to the western Mediterranean (where it overlaps with the Mediterranean Sand Smelt) and the Canary Islands. It lives mainly around river estuaries but schools into ocean waters. It is a small silvery fish with a black lateral line (unlike most other smelts which are plain silver) and a slightly protruding jaw with slightly open mouth. It typically reaches some 20cm long.
