The Yellowtail Scad is native to warm coastal or reef waters of the Indian and western Pacific Oceans.
The only species in its genus, it is a schooling species growing to some 30cm long (exceptionally to half a metre).
(There is another schooling jack in New Zealand waters, the Yellowtail Horse Mackerel (Trachurus novaezelandiae),
that is also sometimes called the Yellowtail Scad.)
