The Black Rockfish is also called the Black Seaperch, Black Bass and Black Snapper but is not a perch,
bass or snapper but a rockfish with venomous spines, related to scorpionfish.
It looks a little like the Blue Rockfish but has a longer mouth and has a rounder anal fin (less straight-edged).
It also has black spots on its dorsal fin, which the Blue doesn't have.
It is native to kelp forests and rocks of the continental shelf of the Pacific coast of North America from
Alaska to California. It can grow to 63cm (2 feet) in length.
