The European Plaice, usually called just Plaice in Europe, is a flatfish, one of four species of plaice worldwide. It is native to northwestern Europe from the Barents Sea to the Mediterranean. It can tolerate low salinity in river estuaries. It usually has a greyish or brown background with orange spots, but it can vary its base colour to blend with its surrounding so is pale on light sand.

Young are born with an eye on each side but one eye migrates before adulthood. Above is a juvenile whose eye has migrated. It is part of the right-eyed flounder family (and hybridises with the European Flounder although a different genus). The underside of the adult is white. It can grow to 1 metre long.
