There are several species of Lumpsucker but the European Lumpsucker is known just as the Lumpsucker, also Lumpfish. It is native to the northeastern Atlantic, mainly around the Baltic, the North Sea and further north to the Arctic circle. A roundish fish when adult, its colour varies from whitish, blue, greenish, yellow and brown and the largest females can reach 50cm long.

Both male and female have modified pelvic fins forming a suction disc with which to hold on to rock in rough seas. This is particularly important for males who guard eggs until they hatch.
