The John Dory has a wide distribution, native to coastal waters of Europe, Africa, Asia
and Australasia. It is one of two species in its genus and one of several fish called "dories".
A predator of smaller fish, it has an extendable mouth and a brown to yellow/gold appearance,
growing to a maximum of 65cm long. Some sources attribute its common name to the French for gilded yellow, "jaune doree".
