The Tub Gurnard is native to seabeds of the eastern Atlantic Ocean from Norway and the Baltic to
northwestern Africa, including the Mediterranean and Black Seas.
A colourful fish, the adult is reddish with bright yellow pelvic fins, a red tail and
electric violet, extendable pectoral fins.
More of the extendable, violet pectoral fins on a subadult. They can make a grunting sound to communicate.
It walks on the seabed hunting small crustaceans using the first three rays of its pectoral fins
extended like fingers or feelers on each side as feet, with pelvic fins for stability.
It also eats small fish. It is part of the fish family called Sea Robins (including other genera of Gurnards).
The adult grows to some 50-60cm long.
