The Painted Sweetlips, also called the Australian Slatey among other names, is a grunt native to reefs of the
Indian Ocean and the western Pacific, but not Australia.
The adult is slate blue-grey with yellow spots and markings on the face.
It can grow to a meter long, but is usually half that. Juveniles have a white body with black horizontal stripes and a yellow belly.
When in transition to adulthood, the lines break up to dark spots which become orange and then largely disappear from the body.
The fish is classed as near threatened in parts of its range.
