The Peppermint Bass, named after its resemblance to a striped peppermint sweet and also called the Swiss Guard Basslet after its resemblance to their uniforms, is related to the Bass and Grouper fish as well as to the colourful Fairy Basslets. It is native to reefs of the Caribbean including from Florida via coastal Central America to northern Brazil. It can grow to some 10cm long. It is solitary and secretive. It is born female and can become male in adulthood.
