The Potato Grouper is native to the tropical and sub-tropical reefs of the Indian and western Pacific Oceans.
The potato name is after the dark brown blotches over its lighter brown body.
A large grouper, it can grow to some 2 metres long.
It is mainly solitary and territorial. Diet is other fish, cephalopods and crustaceans, usually near rocks and reefs.
Females can transition to male in late adulthood. It is vulnerable to overfishing.
