The Brown-marbled Grouper is native to the tropical and sub-tropical waters of the Indian and western Pacific Oceans.
It grows typically to some 50cm long but can be over twice that.
It is solitary and territorial. Diet is other fish, cephalopods and crustaceans, usually near rocks and reefs.
Females can transition to male in late adulthood. Although it can live for 40 years, it is vulnerable to overfishhing.
