The Doris Longwing Butterfly, the only member of Laparus genus and sometimes included in Heliconius, is native to Central America
through to north-western South America. It looks similar to several of the Postmen (Heliconius erato/melpomene)
forms which mimic it and also has several subspecies.
It has different forms, always with the two white stripes on the black forewing but with the rayed pattern on the hind wings in blue (above)
or in white instead of the bright red.
