Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary Boloria selene

The Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary butterfly flies in early summer mainly in the north and west of Great Britain (the one shown was in north Wales).

It sometimes flies together with the slightly earlier and slightly paler Pearl-bordered Fritillary butterfly. They look similar from the top but the underside is quite different. Both have a row of white "pearls" along the border of the underside hind wing but the Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary has these topped with black chevrons rather than orange chevrons and has more white patches on the rest of the hind wing (rather than just two); it also has a larger black spot near the centre of the hind wing.
