Danaid Eggfly/Mimic Butterfly Hypolimnas misippus
The Danaid Eggfly has several other common names including the Danaid Mimic, Tiger Mimic and Diadem. A common butterfly, it is native to Africa, Asia and Australasia.
The male topside, above left, looks similar to the Common or Great Eggfly which overlaps its range. The male underside, above right, however is quite different.
The female Danaid Eggfly is entirely different to both the female Common Eggfly and to the male Danaid Eggfly.
However, she looks very similar to the inedible Plain Tiger Danaid Butterfly for camouflage protection, hence the other name of Danaid Mimic and (Plain) Tiger Mimic.
More male Danaid Eggflies with the same iridescent blue-/purple-ringed, egg-shaped spots of the Common Eggfly.
The blue/purple iridescence is visible only from some angles (above left and centre are the same butterfly).
The "lace" at the edge of the female Danaid Eggfly's wings, topside and underside, is a key feature to distinguish her from the Plain Tiger
(and from the Leopard/Orange Lacewing topsides).
