The Small Blue butterfly is small (wingspan 16-30mm, the UK's smallest) but is not very blue. The topside is brown and the
male has some blue scales. The underside is beige with a few dark spots.
It is native to much of temperate Eurasia. It is rare in the UK and confined to small
colonies on chalk or limestone downland or coastal areas where its sole larval foodplant, kidney vetch, still grows.
