Small Apollo Butterfly
The beautiful Small Apollo Butterfly, also called Phoebus Apollo, is found in high mountain regions of Europe (Alps, Urals), Central Asia, Siberia, China and, surprisingly, North America. Smaller than the Mountain Apollo, its habitat is usually higher in the mountains, but these (with several others) were at some 1600 metres.

The Small Apollo has additional red marks on the forewing compared to the Mountain Apollo, including crimson circles particularly on the larger, more sharply marked female, and has black and white banded antennae. Those shown were in the mountains of southeast Kazakhstan, photos by Alexandra Makhnina.
