The Red Admiral butterfly is native to most of the warmer temperate regions of the northern Hemisphere
covering Eurasia, North Africa, North America and the Caribbean.
They used to be all immigrants to UK but now, with warmer winters, some may hibernate in the UK through the winter.
FOREIGN RED ADMIRALS:
The Canary Island Red Admiral Vanessa vulcania: has less white on the wingtips,
darker red, more black on the red bands - more like chain links than red band. It was considered a subspecies of the
similar-looking Asian Red Admiral until 1992.
Both versions of Red Admiral, atalanta and vulcania can be found on Tenerife,
appropriately as an Atlantic, volcanic island.
