The Giant Wood Rail is native to forest swamps, open marshy areas
and fields in southern Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and northern Argentina.
As their name suggests, they are the largest of the Rail family.
Plumage is multicoloured but muted in silver grey, warm brown and salmon pink,
with a greeny-yellow bill with orange base, pink-red legs and red eyes.
Although the bird is shy, the males have a particularly loud voice used for calling for a mate or declaring territory.
Habitat destruction and hunting are causing the population to decline.
