Macaroni Penguins are the largest of the crested penguins, at some 70 cm high. They are related to the other crested penguins such as the smaller Rockhoppers.
The word "macaroni" used to be applied to a feather in one's hat, hence their name.
They spend most of their lives at sea, coming ashore to breed on the very south coast of South America and on many of the islands between there and the Antarctic.
The head plumes are pale orange not rockhopper yellow.
Macaroni Penguins enjoy singing -- Yankee Doodle?
Juvenile Macaronis don't have the yellow locks.
They look similar to Rockhopper juveniles.
Initially they have black beaks and feet that turn red/pink later.
