The Northern Bald or Waldrapp Ibis is native to North Africa and the Middle East but is critically endangered in the wild. It is being re-introduced to Turkey and Southern Europe.

An ugly, bald, turnip-faced bird with such beautiful iridescent plumage

Unlike most other ibises, it is not a water/wading bird but lives/eats on land, often in arid areas.

 

The Southern Bald Ibis also inhabits dry areas away from water. It is native to an area of Southern Africa and also has an unfeathered face and head, but with a red cap.
