The Green Heron doesn't look green. Prevalent from North to Central America,
these photos were taken in Mexico, Costa Rica and Florida by Alexandra Makhnina.
It is closely related to the Striated Heron (Butorides striata)
of tropical Africa/Asia/Australasia/South America and the Lava Heron of the Galapagos;
all three look similar and were previously classed as one species -- the Green-backed Heron.
Interesting behaviour: it often uses tools as lures to attract fish or prey.
It's also a good thief . . .
It can sometimes look more blue than green. Here it has its neck "closed" but when extended
the neck is as long as the bird's body.
