The Australasian Gannet looks similar to the Cape Gannet of southern Africa and the Northern Gannet of northern Europe.
Like them, it dives from height and pursues fish under water.
It breeds around the coasts and islands of southeast Australia and, mainly, New Zealand.
Gannets nest in huge colonies, the one here being at Cape Kidnappers in New Zealand.
Gannets have tan heads, blue eyelids, big, striped beaks and striped, webbed feet. They have a reputation for being voracious eaters.
