The Red-billed Hornbill is found in much of sub-Saharan Africa. The previous five regional subspecies
are now usually split into full species, in which case most photos on this page are of the Northern Red Hornbill.
It is a small hornbill with no (or very little) casque on its bill.
Male and female have similar plumage.
Like other hornbills, the female stays behind a closed nesthole while breeding, and she and the chicks
are fed by the male through a small opening.
