The Southern Ground Hornbill is the largest species of hornbill and one of two "Ground" hornbills
(the other is the Abyssinian or Northern); it is native to south and east Africa (below Ethiopia).
It has bright red skin around the eye and, especially the male, a strange red throat bulge - an inflatable pouch.
Juveniles have yellow-brown throat pouches.
Unusually for a bird, it has very long eyelashes
which act as dust covers
and its under body covering is more like fur than feathers.
