Turkey Vulture Cathartes aura

The Turkey Vulture, also called the Turkey Buzzard in North America, is native to North, Central and South America. Its name is a reference to its resemblance to a wild turkey. Like other vultures, it scavenges carrion and has a bald face and head for hygiene.

It also has a hole through its nose (seen sideways), a red/pink head and a white beak. It is one of the few birds of prey to have a really good sense of smell, which it uses to find the foul-smelling, decaying flesh on which it feeds.

It has such a good sense of smell to find carcasses while flying high in the sky, that it is being trained in drugs detection, where it proves more successful than dogs (but less so than bees).
