The one depicted here is also called the Andean Condor to distinguish it from the slightly smaller (up to 9 foot wingspan) and very rare Californian Condor (Gymnogyps californianus), the latter being a different species confined to southwest US and Mexico. The Andean Condor, as its name suggests, is native to the Andes of South America.

The Condor is black with a white neck ruff and white on the topside of its wings and, like all vultures, has a bare head for hygiene.
