The Harris Hawk is native to the Americas, from southwest US to South America. Feral hawks elsewhere are usually escapees from falconry.
The adults have dark brown plumage with rich rufous wing patches and "trousers". They also have a white-tipped black tail
(and white vent and upper tail visible in flight).
It is unusual among hawks as it hunts communally and cooperatively in a family flock,
often including a female with 2-3 males plus offspring that may stay, hunt and nest together for a few years.
The juvenile, above right, has a speckled front and striped "trousers".
