The pretty Plum-headed Parakeet, also called the Plum Head, is native throughout the Indian sub-continent. It is appropriately named and is one of the Ring-necked species of parakeets.

In addition to his distinctive plum head (read at front with blue-purple tinge at back) with narrow black border, he has a blue-green nape collar changing to black at the front, bluish-green patches on wing and rump, red upper wing spots, a blue outer and yellow under tail with white tip, and an orange coloured upper beak.

The female has a grey head, yellow-green collar and yellowish beak. She doesn't have a red shoulder patch.

The Blossom-headed Parakeet, native to Southeast Asia from northeast India to the coast of Indo-China, looks like a muted form of its relative the Plum-headed. The male has a pink head with greyish tinge at back and thin black border but no blue-green collar or bluish wing patches. He has the red wing patch and a long bluish-green tail tipped with yellow. He also has an orange upper beak and black lower beak.

The female has a grey head and yellowish beak but no collar.
