The Mountain Parakeet lives at high altitude in the Andes of Argentina, Chile, Bolivia and Peru.
The Latin name "aurifrons" means gold-fronted but only the male (above right/centre) has a yellow front
(brow, face, chest, belly), the female (above left) being plainer green.
The Mountain Parakeet nests underground, digging long tunnels and a nest chamber into cliffs or slopes
using its claws and beak.

The Red-billed subspecies of Mountain Parakeet (Psilopsiagon aurifrons rubrirostris),
above, native to Chile, has less yellow on its front. The male has a pale pink bill.
