The Red Lory is, as expected, mainly red. It has purple-blue patterns on its back similar to the Blue-eared Lory,
black (and sometimes some blue) on its wings, blue on its vent and thighs but almost no blue on the face/head
(slight mauve earmarks in young and dark eye-ring).
There are 2-4 subspecies depending on authority, the one shown with a red bill being the nominate (Moluccan).
It is native to the Moluccas and neighbouring islands in Indonesia.
The Buru Red Lory subspecies, above, has a darker front, a dark red (almost maroon) back and more black on the wings and tail.
