The purple nape that gives this lory its name is a purple patch or streaking at the back of its black cap, shown above.
The blue thighs give its alternative name.
The under-wing is also colourful. The Purple-naped Lory is native to Indonesia.
The yellow half-collar and black cap should not be confused with the similar Yellow-bibbed Lory or Black-capped Lory.
The lory is endangered, particularly by trapping for the cagebird trade.
