The Black Lory, also called Rajah Lory, is native to Indonesia. Its plumage is
not entirely black but has red or brown mottling, a blue rump and red/yellow in the tail.
The nominal subspecies of Black Lory can have some maroon/brown feathers giving it a
maroon sheen in the light. It also has a blue rump and a flaming red and yellow under-tail. Male and female
have similar plumage. Young have red mottled feathers that are moulted out as they mature.
One of the subspecies, Chalcopsitta atra insignis,
known as the Rajah Lory, has red on its face above the beak and on the cheeks, red "shoulders", red thighs and red underwings.
It has the same flame-coloured under-tail of a red base and yellow end.
