The Red-crowned Parakeet, sometimes called the Red-fronted Parakeet or by its Maori name Kakariki, is native to New Zealand.
It used to be abundant but is now extinct on the mainland (North and South Islands) and confined to offshore islands, including Stewart Island in the south.
The decline is mainly due to introduced predators.
(There is also another species of "Red-crowned Parakeet," Pyrrhura roseifrons, of South America.)

Yellow and pied (yellow/green) mutations of the Red-crowned Kakariki are bred in captivity.
The Yellow-crowned Parakeet or Kakariki population has also declined but it is still present on New Zealand's main two islands as well as some offshore islands.
Male and female have similar plumage.
There are several similar-looking parakeets to both the red- and yellow-crowned kakarikis on different
pacific islands around New Zealand given separate species or subspecies status.
