The Black-headed Caique/Parrot is native to northern South America, mainly north of the Amazon.
There are two subspecies, the nominate race (above and below) with orange thighs and
P.m. pallidus with yellow thighs.
"Caique", pronounced "Ka-ee-k"is named after a white shirt with a ruffled front.
Although the Black-headed Caique has a white belly, the White-bellied Caiques are different species
that don't have the black head. These White-bellied species have recently been split from one to three and given different names
(see links below).
