The Patagonian or Burrowing Conures, native to southern Argentina, southern Chile and Uruguay, are unusual for parrots in that
they burrow into cliffs for nesting.
They are also known as Cliff-dwelling Conures or Parakeets.
The male and female have similar plumage. Their underside is colourful.
There are 3 subspecies:
the (Lesser) Patagonian (all above) Cyanoliseus patagonus patagonus, the most common, with a white shoulder stripe
and one of the largest conures at 45 cm long,
. . . the less colourful Andean Patagonian, Cyanoliseus patagonus andinus (above),
with its mainly brown front,
. . . and the largest of all conures (up to 48 cm long), the Greater Patagonian (above/below),
Cyanoliseus patagonus bloxami/byroni, with its full white necklace.
The Greater Patagonian doing some "Burrowing";"Cyanoliseus" refers to the blue flight feathers of the species.
