The Knot, called Red Knot in North America, breed around the Arctic
and migrate in winter either to temperate Europe (including UK estuaries) or to the tropics or the southern hemisphere.
A little larger than the Dunlin, the Knot's breeding plumage is a rufous
front including face and belly ("Red Knot"). The winter plumage is brownish grey with pale belly. Those above are on the turn.

Knot and Godwits in flight
Knot form huge flocks in winter. The common and scientific names are after
King Canute (also spelled "Knut") who sat on the shore and defied the waves (and got his feet wet).
