The Lesser Black-backed Gull is smaller and greyer than the Great Black-backed and has yellow legs. It breeds in far northern Europe and winters in mainly coastal areas of temperate Europe, Africa, South Asia and even the eastern USA.

The Lesser Black-backed Gull above right was ringed in northern Spain as a youngster; it was photographed in southeastern UK (above) and later in northern Germany and a year later it was back in southeastern UK - information from the number on its leg ring.
