The previously-known Crestless Fireback pheasant was split into two species, the Malayan, the male of which has
delicate golden wavy lines on its iridescent, midnight blue plumage, and the Bornean, which has pale or silvery stripes on its chest.
Both males have an orangey "fireback" rump and a yellowy buff tail; females have plain dark blue plumage.
The Malayan Crestless Fireback is native to Malaysia and Indonesia's Sumatra. Like other fireback pheasants,
they are critically endangered, declining through habitat destruction and over-hunting.
